USA Baseball Bat Standard FAQ

What does Bat Standard mean?

All team members of Major Division, Minor Division and Tee Ball are required to use only bats that are approved by the USABat Standard. Depending on the division of play and the skill level of the player the bat standard varies. Players in Junior League Divisions and players that are in Intermediate Divisions, may choose to use BBCOR bats or USABat standard bats. While players in the Senior League Divisions are required to use BBCOR bats, which are standard for the collegiate and high school levels.

How did USA Baseball become involved?

USA Baseball becomes involved as a governing body to take the lead in establishing new standards. With scientists conducting theoretical modeling testing, they were able to endorse the USABat standard, just as other governing bodies endorse equipment standards for their respective sport.

Are there any other organizations implementing the new standards?

The new standard is implemented by Little League Baseball® as well as Pony Baseball, Dixie Youth Baseball, Cal Ripken Baseball/ Babe Ruth Baseball, the AAU and the AABC.

Is every division in Little League Baseball® affected by this change?

This change only affects Major, Minor and Tee Ball divisions. These divisions will be using the USABat Standard in every country and all regions. The Junior League and Intermediate Baseball Divisions will be using USABat Standard or BBCOR bats. However, the Senior Leagues in all countries and regions will still be using BBCOR bat standards.

The new standards will not affect soft ball bats, these standards only apply to baseball bats.

How will the Little League Challenger Division® and Senior League Challenger Divisions be affected?

The Challenger Divisions in both the Senior League and Little League will be governed under the USABat Standard as of 2018.

Will older model baseball bats be allowed in Little League® divisions or activities, games or practices?

Older model baseball bats are not being allowed in Little League® divisions or activities, games or practices as of January 1, 2018. All bats including the youth bat have the most pop is required to be marked with a USABat label to qualify for use in Little League Baseball® activities, including games and practices.

How can the Little Leaguers tell if their bat is USABat standard approved for play?

Little Leaguers will be able to tell if their bat is USABat standard approved for play because all bats bearing the USABat certification are permissible for Little League play and only bats bearing the USABat certification are allowed for play in Junior, Intermediate, Major, Minor and Tee Ball Baseball Divisions.

Why did the standard change requiring bats to be “wood-like”?

The standard changed requiring bats to be “wood-like” because their performance provides integrity to the game. Wood is becoming a scarce resource and these bats must perform with limitations meeting the highest performance wood. This benefits younger players by providing a bat with better weight balance that is much easier to handle and is more durable. The “wood-like” standard is performance-based and provides an adequate response to those who prefer players only use wooden bats.

Can I choose to use USABat bats or Bat Performance Factor bats in Little League®?

You cannot choose to use the Bat Performance Factor bats as of 2018 in any Little League Baseball® Division.

Will Little League® still be using the BBCOR bat in Intermediate, Senior League and Junior League Baseball Divisions?

The Intermediate and Junior League Divisions will be using either BBCOR or USABat standard bats and the Senior League Division will continue using the BBCOR bat standard.

Are any Little League® divisions going to have weight, size and drop limits?

The USA Bat standards do not have weight, size and drop limits, this is to allow young players to use bats that are made from lightweight materials.

Are the BBCOR and 1.15BPF designations still significant in Little League®?

The 1.15BPF designation is no longer significant in the Minor, Major and Tee Ball divisions of Little League® baseball, it has been replaced with the USABat standards in these divisions. The Intermediate and Junior Leagues may choose between the BBCOR and the USABat standards and the Senior League will continue to use the BBCOR bat standards.

Were these changes made for safety reasons?

These changes were not implemented for safety reasons, they were made for positive reinforcement for Little League baseball. These changes allow the young player the benefit of a non-wood bat while meeting the performance standards of a wooden bat.

Are umpires required to inspect bats before they are used in games?

According to Regulation 1.10, umpires will be required to inspect bats before they can be used in games to make sure they meet all Little League® standards and specifications.

Will the barrel size matter with new bats?

The barrel size will matter with new bats, all bats must be made in 2 5/8-, 2 ½- and 2 ¼- inch dimensions.

Does it matter whether the bats are alloy or composite barrel?

It does not matter whether the bats are alloy or composite barrel, the USA Bat standard applies the same to both.

Why were the standards changed at the Junior League and Intermediate levels allowing USABat Standard bats and BBCOR standard bats?

The standards were changed at the Junior League and Intermediate levels allowing USABat Standard bats and BBCOR standard bats because there is the reason not to combine them for those choosing the option.
